La Crete Fort

La Crete Fort
4 AdultsLa Crête Fort is located on a tranquil headland on Jersey’s rugged north coast between Bonne Nuit Harbour and Giffard Bay. It dates back to the 1830s on a site that was first militarised in the 16th century. During the German Occupation in the Second World War it was extended as part of the fortification of the Island. Most recently it was the weekend retreat for the Island’s Lieutenant-Governors.
La Crête may not be as well appointed as the Jersey Heritage Trust’s other self-catering properties, but what it lacks in furnishings and fittings is more than compensated for by the absolutely stunning location. The accommodation comprises one double bedroom, one single bedroom and a lounge/diner wih a sofa bed and kitchen on the ground level. A narrow flight of stone steps leads to a fair weather extra dining/living area in a large chamber with an unusual vaulted granite ceiling. The shower room and toilet are on the same level as the bedroom and can only be accessed through the single bedroom. The property also comprises exterior areas including a large gun platform jutting out to the tip of the promontory.
The backdrop to the front is the steep, rugged cliffs of Jersey’s dramatic north coast with sea views from the gun platform at the rear to the Paternoster Reef, Sark and the distant coast of France. Giffard Bay to the east is a secluded rocky and pebble covered bay, popular with local bathers and occasional surfers. To the west lies the picturesque port of Bonne Nuit. Access is via a narrow, winding unsealed road.
The property is isolated on Jersey’s North Coast cliff path route, but befitting the status of previous occupants, is a secure retreat with undoubtedly some of the best views in the Channel Islands.
The 18-pounder 19th century guns and the German anti-tank and heavy machine guns have long gone, but like the other forts and towers, La Crête has retained its authenticity and historical context, and is evidence of how defensive theory developed in a changing military environment.
This property is not suitable for toddlers and very young children because of the different levels and steps but a cot is available for a young baby.
This property allows pets.

Customer Comments
"Fantastic location for peace and quiet"
"We enjoyed the location away from civilisation and the noise of day to day rat race, the accommodation was inviting, warm, comfortable, peaceful and has great views of the coast line and harbour. The outside area would be great in the summer for a BBQ and get-together with friends or family. Definitely recommend to others who want a quiet weekend to revive their batteries and get away from all the electronic gadgets of day to day living nowadays."
"We had a wonderful stay at La Crete Fort following our wedding this summer in Jersey. It was exciting to arrive in our finery, raise the flag, and feel a bit like royalty! The Fort is at one of the most beautiful locations in Jersey, so it was perfect for a BBQ - looking out over the Bay and over to France. It impressed many of our UK visitors."
"Fantastic place - it is a great place in a fantastic surrounding. Furnishings suit the property, the environment is amazing"
